Changing your surname

Family record book
The family record book contains extracts of the civil status records of family members. It must be updated whenever an event occurs after it is issued (marriage, birth, death, etc.). Duplicate copies can be issued. The book also contains texts relating to family law.

Marriage
To marry in France, you must meet certain requirements concerning age and residence, and not be related to each other. A file containing certain required documents must be submitted to the town hall of the commune chosen for the ceremony.

The civil solidarity pact (Pacs) is a contract between two adults, of different or the same sex, to organize their life together.

Divorce
There are four types of divorce. Some divorces are contested (divorce for fault, irretrievable breakdown of the marriage or acceptance of the principle of divorce). By contrast, divorce by mutual consent is uncontested. Legal separation allows spouses to remain married but live apart.
